Footballs greatest mistake (IMHO of course) was to try and mould itself to
'the American model'. It was doomed to financial failure from the off. In
many States across the US there is one NFL team, and a few College teams
per State. Each State is probably bigger than Scotland! So it's like all
supporting the National team, every week. No Leeds, No Man U, No Donny
etc. Everyone in the State supports that team and therefore the financial
opportunities are enormous. We try to build football in exactly the same
way and, hey guess what, even 50,000 people a week can't make you money!
Then Rugby (League and Union) and cricket all think it's the only sensible
way for their sport to go ... and guess what, it's not! Why, why oh why oh
why, do we have a Rugby League World Cup? It's pointless (and I like the
sport) "Oh because football has one"? Football is the global game, no
question, but trying to be like the NFL where the players are massively
overpaid doesn't work.
