Start a bidding war?  Right.  Yes.  Sure.

If Cellino’s plan was to sell him, playing him out of position and generating 
discord with the player is about the worst thing he can do.  Yes, let’s sell 
when there is no leverage as the bottom dweller’s circle like a feeding frenzy 
of minnows.

Cellino may be a strange man with strange ideas, he may not be the owner we 
wanted, but he is also not in the business of taking a wad of cash and burning 
half of it for little or no reason.

It's akin to constructive dismissal imho, play him out of position to p him
off, then offer him a pay cut to rub salt in the wounds, then act surprised
when he wants to leave and make out he's the one that's disloyal - I
thought we'd seen the end of cuddly ken!
