The positives were a grittier, tougher performance from us and a nicely headed
goal from Jansson. The negatives were the extraordinary number of simple
mistakes our players made: failing to pass to the open man, failing to clear
the ball (on at least one occasion watching it bounce out of play for a
throw-in deep in our half when it could have been thumped into theirs), failing
to pass in front of (as opposed to straight at or behind) a running teammate,
needing more than one touch to bring a ball under control, etc. Saiz's tendency
to run straight at the nearest two opposition players also gets tiresome. Just
our luck that the first time this season Cooper actually directs a free header
on target, he's marginally offside.

But the turning point for me was the cross that flashed across the face of the
Villa goal, only to missed by three of our players. Ekuban was the greatest
offender here. The ball basically went through his legs when it seemed easier
to score. A decent striker should have buried that. Once we missed that, I
figured that was the game gone. I even said to myself that Lansbury - at the
time still on the bench - would probably score the equalizer.

We need to do more of the basics right and we need a lethal frontman before we
can start thinking about promotion.

Cheers!

Sean

Very entertaining first 45, but an average (at best) second. One problem is
simply the number of times Ayling either loses the ball in terrible positions,
or gets out of position by over-shooting his runs. I thought he looked out of
his depth at times. Quite why we were hitting long balls to Roofe near the end
is beyond me - he’s not Alf Tupper! A good point probably, with some good
performances from Ekuban and Vierra, but we don’t look like we’ll be contenders
- too lightweight up front. Sent from my iPad> On 1 Dec 2017, at 21:45, Michael
