Farming Fish for Mass Production
Just recently the Tasmanian Minister for Primary Industries, Water and
Environment claimed a significant milestone in "closing the life cycle loop"
of the Striped Trumpeter - a native marine fish. The breakthrough occurred
at the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute in Hobart, Tasmania,
where they have "mastered the holding and conditioning of spawning stock in
captivity ... produced juveniles on a number of occasions and closed the
striped trumpeter's life cycle in captivity." The successful laboratory
experiment opens the way for a new aquaculture industry.
But in this drive to mass produce native fish in closed environments so that
they'll grow to a convenient size and potentially breed out unwanted bones -
there are some relatively unexamined environment and animal welfare
concerns. Today on Earth Matters we explore these issues with Glenys Oodjes,
Director of Animals Australia, and Jenny Guice, Groundwater Networker with
the Nature Conservation Council in Sydney.
A weekend of action on Dhaurtwuurung country
Today on Earth Matters we also hear from Sandra Onus about Koori concerns
for the forests and land in Western Victoria. The forests of that region are
currently the subject of a Regional Forest Agreement, but they've also been
systematically destroyed and continue to be logged, chipped and used for
firewood. Sandra describes the region and the long history of indigenous
connection.
The Koori community are actively opposing the continued destruction of their
land and as part of their action they've organised a weekend of protest over
February 20th and 21st. Everyone's invited and Sandra gives the details
about how you can get involved.
