I have noticed a potential message threading problem on the new Legacy mail server/mailing list...
Message-ID ---------- Legacy now appears to assign a unique Message-ID to every single email it sends out to the list users. The old server/list simply reused the incoming Message-ID that came with the original post for every outgoing email. This could potentially cause threading problems for LUG users (and the LUG Archives). Here is an example: 1) I receive Ron's list msg as "[email protected]". 2) Jenny receives the same list msg as "[email protected]". 3) Jenny replies to Ron's list msg. 4) Jenny's reply comes to me with In-Reply-To of "[email protected]" (which technically I never received). The way it used to work: 1) I receive Ron's list msg as "a...@ronsmachine". 2) Jenny receives the same list msg as "a...@ronsmachine". 3) Jenny replies to Ron's list msg. 4) Jenny's reply comes to me with In-Reply-To of "a...@ronsmachine" (which I did receive). In the 1st case it can't be threaded using the In-Reply-To header. In the 2nd case it can. *** I am not sure how different email clients (and the Legacy Archives) determine threading, but my guess is that if they can't count on the In-Reply-To (or References) header, then they will likely default to threading by Subject. So be aware that you might see some posts popping up in a thread where they don't really belong. *** I believe that the solution to the problem would for the server/list *not* to assign its own Message-IDs, but to simply re-use the Message-ID that came with the incoming post. However, I don't know if Legacy's new server/list has this ability. Apparently the old one did have this capacity. *** Also posted to the LUG to make users aware of the potential issue. -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
