I have found that Dollarhide's numbering system is the only one that will
UNIQUELY identify ANYONE related to the root person, usually your self if
you are doing your own family history. Each direct ancestor, and yourself,
are identified by a digit.0. The numbering follows Anentafel numbering.
Therefore, I am l.0 regardless of where I am in the line of siblings. All
males then are twice the number of their immediate descendant, therefore my
father is 2.0, my mother is 3.0; my father's father is 4.0, my father's
mother is 5.0; my mother's father is 6.0, my mother's mother is 7.0. Take
a look at a blank pedigree chart and see how it is numbered. Here is a link
to a full explanation of the system:

By using this numbering system, I can create notebooks for original
documents and use the number for identification. Where a family may be
concerned in a photo or document, I use, for instance, 2.0/3.0 to show that
a family is involved. I use the first-named person in a document (or the
person that has the information in the document, and make reference to that
individual where the others are concerned. I file the children behind the
married couple until they marry and have their own identity, or leave the
home. The children listed behind the marriage couple are kept in their
numerical order.

I hope this helps some of you, as over the years I have puzzled over this
ever so much and find it the most helpful solution for me.

I don't use it at all. It is from a system (before personal computers),
which used a manila folder numbering system, each piece of paper was named.
ex: Birth0001, Census60, Marriage12; which put all the births in the birth
folder, sequentially numbered in order recieved, similar to RINs and MRINS.
In each mnila folder the records were stored in the number order. It can
still be a good organizing sytem, but most programs 'sort' by names and not
by type of record. Some of us from those days eventually abandoned those
systems.

I know the feeling. I exported from FTM 2009 to a GEDCOM that I imported
into Legacy a few months ago and I'm still cleaning up the sources and
attaching images from Ancestry.com and other sources.

One thing I'd like to know from others is: Is there any point in entering a
File ID on the Display Picture page where you enter other information? I've
been entering the actual file name (JPG) for all images, but it doesn't seem
to help much if I need to use that same image later on and try to find that
File ID again. In most cases, I can't find it so what's the point of
assigning a File ID. I thought it would be useful for photos of people or
gravesites, but I never can get it to work.

I still have hundreds of images to attach to sources so maybe I should just
skip adding the File ID. The image name is listed at the bottom of the page
anyway.

That sounds like a really good method, Margaret. Boy, do I wish I'd started
out that way - before I had 4600 individuals in my file.
I started out with the old Generations program and then moved to Legacy
about 2 years ago. I love Legacy, but of course imported from my old program
rather than entering everyone by hand. I suppose this happens to plenty of
us, eh?
Thanks for the clear explanation of how you manage census records!
