I am interested in your comment as I have been following this thread – I use
the following (as an example)to identify/name my documents:
Smith, John P. [RIN] [MRIN] 1900 Census

All my various items show up by name and numbers together and in order. For
the most part I have censuses (federal and state for US, Newfoundland, etc),
birth registers, baptism registers, marriage registers, death registers,
grave markers/tombstones, military registrations, immigration records, and
various Swedish examination records, birth, marriage, death, move in and
move out records.

I do NOT reuse RINs or MRINs (I believe that is a checkbox in the settings)
and I don’t think about these numbers as having to go together by family
members so I am unsure how “everything gets messed up . . .” I also have
printed to file on my computer a listing of the RINs and MRINs as well as
whenever I have deleted any duplicates (since I only have approximately
5,000 individuals this has not really come up much). I would be interested
in hearing others thoughts in this regard – have folks lost their RINs in
the past, does the method I use create some problems further down the line.
Thanks,
Teresa

I should add, that I have found the use of RINs, and MRINs, NOT HELPFUL!
Everything gets messed up as one adds new people, or deletes duplicates
created when more information on an individual is found, or as was pointed
out when new children are found, or when melding files together, and all the
other things one does to mess up the RIN numbers.

That is why I left the Dollarhide system (it was good but too cumbersome). .
The ahentafel numbers were over 30-40 characters long. It was not the only
system I used before I bought my first computer, but when the programs
created RINs, I no longer needed to deal with them anymore.

The main problem I found with the Dollarhide system (which I used years ago
for a while) - is that if you discover a child you didn't know about that
changes the numbers of other people you have already entered. Also, the
numbers can get pretty long, although the longer the number, the less
related the people likely are to you....

How have you found this to work with Legacy? Do you give everyone this
number for their ID number?
