As someone who went through a similar process I suggest you look at your
Master Location List for variations of the same places.
Go to View > Master Lists > Location
To get similar places together you can use the right to left sort order
country, state, county, city instead of city-> country
If you find multiple versions of the same place use the combine button
to combine all the variations into a single name. You can highlight all
but the one you want to keep before using the combine button and all the
selected places will be combined into the single version you choose.
There is also a feature under the Options button menu that will, after
you have tagged those non-locations, let you copy or move the
non-location entries to Event or General Notes.

You can also use a similar review of the other master lists, Source,
Surnames, etc. to clean up variations coming from FTM.

Some surname variations may be legitimate but the show list button on
the master surname list will give you a list of people using the
variation so you can check if any should be changed.
