Just Experimented again. Simple - it is the act of adding the Marriage
(anything including ?) before the spouse is entered. It is the Prog assuming
that a Marriage has occurred without a Spouse (RIN) that sets the wording.
The fact that a Spouse is added after does not re-set the wording.
I just proved that you do not even have to add a child to show this fault. I
tried all manner of lines, brackets & dots (Periods) etc. all were
allocated a RIN. In fact Square brackets with a row of Periods looks great
to prompt for an update entry to a tree. I reset the wording behind the
Override Tab back to "Married" before each try.

John,

I have had a preliminary look at the Descendant Report both using blank for
missing information and underscore, also with the couple containing the
unknown spouse set as "married" and "did not marry". In the case of them
being married, and no underscore, it simply stated "Sarah Ann married", and
when set to unmarried "Sarah had a child". When the underscore was set then
it produced "Sara Ann married ____________" or "Sarah had a child
with______________".

I cannot tke this any further without knowing:

1. under what circumstances are you seeing "someone"
2. your settings in Options>Customise>View for an unknown spouse/partner
3. your settings on the individual's marriage screen.
