See if this helps:

If a person's name is John James Smith, I enter "John James" in the
given field.  I enter "Smith" in the surname field. So, therefore to
me, "S" would be a bona fide name and I would enter "Glade S" in the
given name field and leave the period off. Does that reasoning help?
