Hi Lea-Anne There are 3 main places to enter names in Legacy;
1 Name (Given and Surname): You can use familiar names in quotes eg Margaret "Margo", and they can be used in narrative paragraphs – Report Options/Format/ use quoted names for narratives, remove quoted given names. Familiar names (in quotes) should be understandable without further explanation, otherwise they are probably best as Alternate Names. I always use the first formal name for this Name (usually on a birth certificate or equivalent). 2 Alternative Name: Other variations and Nicknames are treated as Alternate Name and can be included in the Index and Name List preceded by ~, and can be printed as AKA the next line under Name. Include the full name (not just the variation) – so that it will appear correctly in the lists. You cannot add a Date, Location or Notes to these Alternate Names. 3 Event AKA: Events (including the AKA facts) can have an Event Notes, a Date, a Location and a Source. This is useful if the alternative name needs an explanation (date of change, changed because of religion etc). However they cannot appear in the Name List or Index. I have imported my file from PAF. My question relates to which is the best way to record the different spelling of my ancestors name. Due to illiteracy the name has been spelt different ways depending on who recorded it eg. parish register, census returns. And finally the way my gr grandfather's name was recorded on his birth registration. Going back 2 or 3 generations before that is where the differences occured. Is the name as recorded on the birth record the "main" name and the way is it spelt on other records during his/her life the alternate name or do I use the name I know now and list all the others as alternate names. Also upon reading other emails on this list, I hope that I have been able to convert this email to plain text. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
