It rather depends how you *want* to do it!

Personally, I make a difference between alternative spellings and actual
AKAs.  The former I record as they appear when I enter them in Event
Description, Source Detail Name fields and so on.  The latter I enter in
the AKA field.

As far as which is the "main" name goes, I usually choose the one which
is used to record the person's birth (if known) but sometimes that is a
different spelling to what is nearly always used after that, so then I
use the more common one.
