Somebody mentioned about automating this, but I decided to not do it because I
had already gotten in too deep fixing it manually. I'm assuming that if I
tried to automate it now it might mess everything up that I fixed.

It's the Details that has the source text in the comments.

The process I'm going through is to open up the Detail for the name from the
list, copy the source text (i.e., 1900 Census) for a family, copy everything
from the original source (copyright info., etc.), then create a new source for
each of the families.

I know this is going to be a nightmare later when my source list is over one
thousand pages long. Since the Source Details can't be updated for all persons
at once like I can do with sources, I don't see any other way around this. I
don't like the idea of copying Source Details for each family person. This is
creating duplicates rather than linking to just the one Detail. Maybe in
version twenty of Legacy they'll fix this.

Later if I have to fix a Detail, I'll have to copy it for the rest of the
people that use it. Then I have to find who else is using it. If it's a vague
source name like I was using (i.e., 1900 U.S. Federal Census), then over two
thousand names are going to show up. That's why I did it this way. I think
Elizabeth Shown Mills book (which I have and never read) says to do it this way.

I don't use Source Writer and probably never will. It's too problematic for me
when I can't find the template I need and have to create one. I've never used
the one in Legacy, but I used the one in FTM and I hated it. I'm assuming they
are similar. I've been reading here that it doesn't translate well in GEDCOMs
either. I prefer to use the basic system so there aren't problems later.

I'm way past the GEDCOM import. That GEDCOM is too old to mess with. I've
added way too much since then to go back and start over. I would dump the
whole thing before going through this nightmare again. I just want to get it
over with.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Sources, Show List

I know you said you were already into this project for more than a
year, but I'm wondering if this might not be able to be better
automated. You said the import put source info. into notes, and
you've got to move them back out to the source. Is this the master
source or the details? I'm going to assume details, as you wouldn't
have to edit all the individuals if it were at the master source
level, right? Sources are imported as basic, are you just editing the
same basic source that was imported or creating a brand new source?
If new, still basic, or Source Writer?

I'm thinking if you are staying with basic, it may be possible to run
your GEDCOM through a preprocess step to better prepare it for import.
The hope of that step would be that the info is imported into the
correct source field and not into the notes? Would that be helpful to
you at all?
