I've seen this debated a lot on this list; you may be able to find some good comments in the archives. I don't remember there ever being a clear consensus; everyone seems to like one way or the other for different reasons. I personally use 'unknown' because it indicates to me that I have looked at that person/relationship and wasn't able to find it at that time. It also quickly groups them all together on the index so I can see that I need to research those further. I could use multiple methods to achieve those same things but this is the quickest for me.
