For any surname of first name that I do not know, I use a "?". It works for me,
even if some programs do not like the use of it. Everyone that reads my data
knows what is meant by it.

Do a name search at any website that you can search on families, and find out
how many people have the "Unknown" name?
At Rootsweb you will find a lot more "?" than you will "Unknown"

Subject: [LegacyUG] When Surname isn't known

I'm debating is it best to leave the surname blank or to use UNKNOWN.
