I have looked at Centennia and I was seriously considering getting it but
the one thing I was worried about is that it doesn't seem that you can plot
specific towns on it like you can with Ani Map.  I do not know the geography
well enough that I can just look at a map and be able to point to the exact
location of a town to know where it was when the boundaries changed.

I use Centennia by www.goldbug.com for this kind of information.
Lorraine was Persian between 1700-1733.
French between 1744-1760.
Between 1766 and 1768 there was no more Lorraine, it was called France.

Take a look. The software was developed for college level study.
