Hi Terri, > I have just purchased Legacy 7.5. I have hundreds of names to be > added. My question: is it better to start entering with my name first > or start at the oldest date/name?
I don't think it matters as far as Legacy is concerned. What I do find useful is that I know my RIN is #1, so I can quickly jump to me when I want by bringing up the Name List (by pressing the letter i key), <Shift><Tab>'ing twice to go back across two fields from the surname to the RIN, and typing a 1. Otherwise, if I kept to the (default) surname order, I'm *way* down the list with a first name starting with a W! I could of course stay in the surname field and type my surname, followed by a comma, then the first letter of my first name to get there too. I'm comfortable with keyboard commands/shortcuts, and prefer them to reaching for the mouse or touchpad, so that's my personal preference. My partner is not a convenient RIN #2 in my database, but #246 which I find easy to remember. I can't tell you anyone else's RIN's - just those two. I'm often changing the relationships set, from my family to his and back again, which is pretty much the only time I use the RIN, and that's only 'cos it's the quickest for me using the keyboard. Have a think about the order of entry that will be convenient to you - that should probably be the greatest priority. If you were working from a book, it would probably be easiest to start at page 1 - that sort of convenience is what I mean. Remember that you can add individuals that don't connect to your other people, and connect them further down the line. So you can start with yourself and work backwards, then jump to a particular line and start at the far end and work forward - and then link the two together when the right people are in the database. In other words, you can change your mind about how to approach the task once you've started, and it will all work out fine in the end. And if do jump around like that, and then you forget that you'd already added a person as a parent (say) and add them again as a child of their parents, you can merge the two together. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
