Charles, Good food for thought, as I head out the door for errands.  Will let it
'percolate.'  Thx.

Paula,

If I understand your problem correctly, it would appear that an Index by surname
that cross references digital or paper documents, filed by Document Type, as
Mary suggested, would solve your problem. For the Index Cross Reference you
could use the RIN, MRIN, or make use of the User ID field to develop your own
identification system. This way you could have the best of both worlds, just my
thoughts.

Thanks, Mary.  I've been wrestling with how to sort/file things, and I really
like doing it by surname, so I can see everything for each family (and it
matches the 'color' approach).  It seems my census data is the only thing that
doesn't always fall neatly into a particular family.  So, I'm not (yet) willing
to abandon a surname approach.

Do you use a file ID or something to help you find it when you need it? Or do
you just look at things from within Legacy?

(There is a very real possibility I am over-analyzing this! lol)

Filing by document type eliminates the need for duplicate copies of both paper
and digital documents. Using a generic file name also helps in that regard.  In
other words, don't put any surnames or other specific details in the file name.

I have been doing that for years and have had no problems with my system.

Mary
