Did I forget to say that each TYPE of document goes in a different binder?
I have a 3 inch binders for

Birth Records (birth certificates, newspaper announcements, etc.)
Death Records (death certificates, obits, funeral cards etc.)
Marriage Records (certificates/licenses/bonds, newspaper announcements etc.)
Bible Records (copies of pages and transcriptions)
Military Records (pensions, compiled service records, discharge from draft
etc.)
Education Records (diplomas, reports cards etc.)
Wills and Probate (wills, administrations etc.)
Church Records (member lists, church minutes etc.)
Social Security Records (SS-5 apps)
Land Records (land patents, headright plats, bounty land)
Deeds (NON land transaction deeds)
Court Records (guardianship bonds, jury lists, etc.)

I use A-Z tab dividers to even make it easier to find what I am looking for.
When I get to many to fit into the 3 inch binder, I split them between two
binders A-N, M-Z)

System

Here are a couple examples. I put the year of birth/death to differentiate
between people with the same name. Women are filed under their maiden
name..
Marriages are filed under the husband's name.

Simmons, Celia D. [1872-1943]
Death Certificate
Forrest Co, MS
23 Sep 1943

Glaentzer, Peter [1874-1940]
Birth Certificate
Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
14 Jan 1874

Lewis, John [1801-1880]
Will
Columbia Co, GA
20 Jun 1868

Miles, James Edward [1879-1950]
Lewis, Eva Mae [1891-1969]
Marriage License
Columbia Co, GA
24 Dec 1908

Silas Simmons [1794-1856]
Compiled Service Record, War of 1812

Morris, Needham William, Jr. [1859-1949]
Family Bible

[some things don't have locations because they aren’t applicable]

With the labels in the upper right hand corner on the outside of the sheet
protectors, I can flip through a book quickly since they are in alphabetical
order.

You could easily adapt this to the system Geoff described in the Legacy
newsletter by adding a distinct file name to each document like Birth 001
and then you could put that in the file ID field in Legacy which would give
you a cross reference.
