Whew! I am nowhere near ready to go straight alphabetical even within document type, let along that just assign a number to the document approach! All my information is family-oriented and that's how I think of my ancestors (family groups), so I'm going to keep things that way. Thanks though for all the details. --Paula in Texas

I put the year of birth/death to differentiate between people with the same name. Women are filed under their maiden name. Marriages are filed under the husband's name. Simmons, Celia D. [1872-1943] Death Certificate Forrest Co, MS 23 Sep 1943 Glaentzer, Peter [1874-1940] Birth Certificate Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany 14 Jan 1874 Lewis, John [1801-1880] Will Columbia Co, GA 20 Jun 1868 Miles, James Edward [1879-1950] Lewis, Eva Mae [1891-1969] Marriage License Columbia Co, GA 24 Dec 1908 Silas Simmons [1794-1856] Compiled Service Record, War of 1812 Morris, Needham William, Jr. [1859-1949] Family Bible [some things don't have locations because they aren’t applicable] With the labels in the upper right hand corner on the outside of the sheet protectors, I can flip through a book quickly since they are in alphabetical order. You could easily adapt this to the system Geoff described in the Legacy newsletter by adding a distinct file name to each document like Birth 001 and then you could put that in the file ID field in Legacy which would give you a cross reference. michele Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
