I have gotten many people started on their family trees by doing some initial research myself. I was shocked at how many trees I actually had on my four physical hard drives! This includes many Legacy trees and several FTM trees as well as a ton of gedcoms. Gen Catalog found them all, which made it easy to do some deleting and otherwise manage them all.
If you only have one data file then GenCatalog is not of much use to you. Concerning all the other file types - I have folders for headstones 'by cemetery' [several of them]. I have family folders for my eight great-grandparents surnames and then sub-folders under them for the other surnames. So, do I keep them in lots of different places outside of Legacy? Ahh, yes! Even you guys who keep your stuff "outside" Legacy, don't keep it in lots of different places, do you? "Free" does not always mean useful.
