Thank you, Sherry and Bob! A little education never hurt anyone! ;) I'm fine with all the files already linked in (especially after renaming/cleaning up). It's all the other "stuff" I've collected in bursts of research the last 7 years or so. Hard copy, emails, genforum posts, text transcriptions of ??, photos unscanned, etc. Slowly but surely I am wading through it and trying to get all caught up. A lot of people keep their files in the Documents folder rather than the default c:\Legacy\Data folder or on a thumb drive or external drive or who knows where.... So from a Support perspective, I think it's an incredibly useful tool, esp when someone can't find their file. It's a lot easier than trying to search for all *.fdb files in Windows, especially if the person is Windows illiterate. Yes, there are people who have more than one genealogy program on their computer. GENCatalog is helpful for finding all genealogy related databases. Each program has their own default folder and it could get confusing trying to remember where something was stored. And who knows where people put gedcoms if they're not super organized! Why multiple programs? A person might like a particular report not found in Legacy or the way another program creates the report. Another program may have a feature they like better or they like the other program's web page generation..... I use GENViewer all the time for searches and sorts that can't be done in Legacy. I do have several programs installed but generally only use them when support questions arise. It's easy to find where the multimedia files you have linked to in Legacy are stored. Go to View > Scrapbook > Print Multimedia List and print the list selecting the type of files and who or what they're possibly attached to.
