Re: Why do you have different types of genealogy files... This is just for me but I suspect others answers would be similar.
1. I started with FTM and used it for many years until I tried Legacy when it was being promoted at a genealogy conference. I usually keep all of my research in one big database but I do have some smaller ones that are kinda 'unrelated' (but is anyone really?) and I kept those separate because I was working on them for extended family members. Sometimes I find these in backups or places that I stored them long ago and had forgotten. So for those, this program would be great. 2. PAF is the program used by the LDS church and has been for decades. It used to be that in order to take your work to the FHC and run Templeready, you would want your file to be in PAF. Plus I taught genealogy classes at church and we were teaching PAF so I actually had some PAF files on my computer for other ward members. And sometimes I just played around between using FTM and PAF to decide what I wanted. 3.When I locate 'cousins' through online databases or other means, I usually request that they send me a gedcom of their research; it is much more informative than a printout and I will download free trials to view them if I don't already have that program on my computer. This lets me see notes and sources that might not otherwise be seen in a report. So I might have their trees stored in their original format, or exported to gedcom or even imported into a Legacy file, or all 3! I see a couple of responses have been posted since I started typing, so you will have plenty to ponder!
