Julia, I knew that I shouldn’t have got out of bed today!! I thought that Tony had put his Legacy program into his Program folder. So forget all the irrelevant parts of what I have written.
There is no problem with your set up as it stands, although if you transfer to another PC the drive letters will need to be the same for Legacy to find the data etc. Remember also that the drive letter of an external drive can vary depending on the order in which external drives are added. Ron, am I missing something: I thought I read that Tony's setup was that on his C:/ drive he had his program files plus his C:/Legacy directory. And that he keeps all the other types of links to his external drives (i.e. pics, etc. somewhere other than where Legacy is installed). I'm still not clear why this is a problem. I believe this is how mine is set up as well which goes something like this: C:/Legacy = where the program is installed F:/Genealogy = default location of family file (this is an additional internal harddrive) F:/Genealogy/_multimedia/pics = as well as _multimedia/docs & _multimedia/video set up here Then I have a 500GB external drive that I keep all genealogy scans as well as Legacy backup files. I copy over to this external drive about every other day with a 3rd party backup program. But I do also do the Legacy backup up (almost) every exit. I'm diligent at keeping that directory clean and just hang on to the last 3 or 4 Legacy backup zip files. When I went on my field trip to the FHL, it was very easy to just copy my multimedia folder over to my laptop, Legacy picked everything up as it should be once I changed my locations. Please let me know the detriment of this type of setup, I'd rather fix something now before anything catastrophic happens.
