You can’t use someone else’s sources for your own when you compile data (well, you CAN but it isn’t kosher). Your source is the binder itself. Since the binders contain extensive research that is unpublished, you can source it as a manuscript. According to Elizabeth Shown Mill’s book Evidence Explained, it should be sourced the same way as a researcher's diary or journal (page 143). Another possible way to cite it is as a research report (page 156).

If it were me, I'd rather have a shorter Legacy file with sources, than a long one without; and I would much rather wait a longer time for the results with sources. I guess it depends on whether she just wants the data as a matter of interest, or she wants a useful genealogy to pass on to descendants. It's really kind of you do do this for her. Good luck with it! ________________________________________ From: Larry Lee <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 6:09 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] Compiling Family History Hello LUG, I have just received two privately created Family History binders (typed and handwritten notes) and one large 3 ring photo album, of information from my wife's side of the family. I have volunteered to compile this information into Legacy for my eldest sister-in-law. My objective is not to publish a book but rather to get all the info and photos into Legacy then save them to CD for family members that may want them. I have decided to put the info from each binder into a separate Family File, thus having three files corresponding to each binder source. These may then be merged into one main file. My primary concern is how to treat the sources. Due to time constraints I am thinking of using the name of each binder as one source for all information contained in the respective Family File. That is each Family File will only have one source for all the information therein. When I do the final merge I plan to source each File once upon import giving me three sources in the combined Family File. My sister-in-law will be listed as the repository for the binders. I hope I have explained this clearly! Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions on this approach would be much appreciated before I start entering the data.
