Just a thought:

If you add 2 test family files, then open two genuine ones, do both
the test families disappear off the list?  Do the four genuine family
files stay or do two of them also disappear?

My thinking is that if you have four genuine files there, they should
all stay.  If not, the software may have become corrupted somehow so a
reinstall of it may solve the problem.
