I wanted to report on the resolution of my problem. Thanks to all for your input. Here's what I found and how I solved it, although I still have a question about one of the programs that has recently appeared in my C drive.
Solution: The Legacy Temp folder on my C drive had several old files in it. I deleted all but the most recent and gained about 80KB of space. That was enough for me to achieve a successful backup. I've never had to delete files from the Legacy temp file before. The program that I found consuming almost half my C drive is called Application Updater. It was installed on June 28, 2012. This is not a program I knowingly installed. The only installations/updates I can recall lately are the Legacy update and a renewal of my Norton antivirus, Norton 360. Does anyone know if this was part of the Legacy update recently? I don't think it was, but I want to be sure. Thanks to everyone for your help and input.
