I just recently created a combined family file by merging my husband's file and mine. The catch is that I had been filing by MRIN and although I thought I'd solved the problem, I think it will be easier if I use the MRINs from the two old files as ID numbers. That would be one use that I can see.
I think you could use J1 for you, J2 for your father, etc. and CH1 for your children's father, CH2 for his father, etc. I just tried using such a number and it worked. Maybe you have some other use or maybe you don't need them at all. I've gotten along very well without them until this recent file merge.
