Just to put my 2 bob’s worth in, RIN numbers are convenient but I create user id’s, the reason (from experience) if you change Genealogy software the new software will generate its own RIN numbers, what you have been working with and maybe sharing with others will be obsolete, by having user id’s they stay consistent no matter what medium you use, example of mine is I use letters and numbers, i.e. Smith would be under S and all surnames starting with S are numbered from 1 onwards, in my case of Woolvett I’m W51 irrespective of RIN number, I also use these id’s for numbering pic’ documents etc.

What do others use as User ID numbers? I like the ahnentafal numbering system (1 for me; 2 for my father; 3 for my mother, etc) but it would not do, since, for my children's benefit, I have their fathers genealogy in my data base as well. All that side would have no number. How on earth do I assign User IDs at this late date anyhow?
