After hearing what everyone has said, it seems to make sense to merge my Genealogy Document Folders with my Genealogy Pictures Folders, surname folders and specific head of household folders so that everything is in the same place and easier to find. Would it matter if the document extensions were different within these folders...docx in a file with .jpg, etc.? Not sure how this works with windows. I am also mulling over the best place to house the Genealogy photos and docs....on my C: Drive with all my other photos and docs or move them over to the Legacy folder. I am finding it cumbersome with the Genealogy items stored with other things. It comes down to what is most convenient with minimal drilling down to get to the item when one wants to link it in Legacy. One person mentioned storing these files in a different drive, sounded like it might be a remote hard drive. Initially a couple of years ago I had set up the Surname files and then sub folders by surname by head of household when I seriously got into research prior to getting Legacy. I started with the 4 main Surnames, but have added more Surname files if I am seeing that I am gathering a lot of info on a particular line (yeah, it probably makes more sense to keep the new line surname folder under the appropriate first line of 4). Thus far I have not run into too many duplicate names, although as one goes further back in time it could be an issue where family names are repeated frequently. About a year and half ago a friend (who has been doing genealogy for over 30 years and ended up being related to me through a 4th great grandfather) told me about the Mary Hill color coded filing system. It seemed that my computer filing logic fit with her system easily, so I set up my paper files using her color coded system and color coded my genealogy lines in Legacy to correspond. I keep the info on females with their parents file and when they get married, I put their info from the marriage date forward in the husband's file. Have yet to see many females remarried, but if their are multiple marriages, then this is indicated a m1, m2, etc. I have tested Geoff Rasmusen's Geo organization, but it hasn't been working for me, which I will be changing back to my original way. Just yesterday prior to sending out my query I had read the information on the Legacy website about organizing by MRIN. At this point I don't think I would switch to the MRIN method, but might consider putting the MRIN into the computer file name for future reference. I can see how this would work for a quicker explorer search.
