File ID numbers let you record any file number from your personal filing
system for those things where a File ID can be assigned. Those who amass
piles of paper copies of documents, or even who store masses of digital
files sometimes have a systematic method of coding those papers/files.
There are four types of records in Legacy that accept a File ID#. These
are master sources, source citation detail, to-do items, and multimedia
items (picture, sound, and video files).

They are totally unrelated to the links to media files/images so no they
will not help you find images that were lost in a GEDCOM export.

You should not lose links to media via the GEDCOM anyway. If you have
lost links it is because the GEDCOM does not include the media files it
only includes the path and file name. If you do not send or receive
copies of the media files along with the GEDCOM then they will not be on
the computer to be found.

There is no global tool to remove any existing File IDs in Legacy but
there is a report which will tell you what ID numbers have been assigned.
1. Choose All Reports (books and others) from the Report pull down menu.
2. Click File ID Numbers.
3. Select the desired reports options.
4. Click either Print or Preview to view the report.
