1) There is no need for me to keep an index because my documents are filed
in a sequential order.

2) Everything I have that is legal size are only copies of originals so I
have no problem folding them to fit into a letter size sheet protector so that
they will fit in my binders.

Hello Marie,

There has been a lot of discussion over on the Organized Genealogist Facebook
group about filing documents the way you describe – numbered in page protectors
in 3 ring binders.

I have two questions: Do you keep an index so you can find documents outside
of your software? And what do you do if you have a mixture of legal size and
letter size documents?

I use the File ID number for my CLOOZ number. Each document, used as a source,
is numbered, ie Birth 001, Death 001 etc, and that number is placed in the File
ID Number.

CLOOZ links people to the documents. In Legacy people are linked to people.
When I need a document to either review or show as proof for an event it's very
easy to find.

Documents are numbered, placed in an acid free page sleeve, then in a 3 ring
binder. When I originally started researching my family in 1975, I used a
family filing system. This often meant making 2 copies of a document when 2
families were on a document. Now my files are arranged by project surname, then
by type of document [I use the KISS principal] then by number.

I'd be very happy to answer any questions on this method.

Hi everyone,

What do the File ID numbers mean and how can they help me?

Are they indicators of where I am (now) missing images I had previously
attached to my tree but have been lost through the gedcom import?

How can I "fix" them if that is the case?

How can I get rid of them if they are now irrelevant?

And how could I use them to my advantage in the future?

Thanks

Kathy
