Thank you Jenny, Brian and Cathy for your replies. First I must admit to a severe case of brain cramp.
My first attempt at entering sources was in Family Treemaker many years ago (program was DOS and on a 3 1/2" disc!). When I transferred the file over to Legacy Family Tree several years ago the sources that I had entered all ended up as Basic Sources in LFT as you know. I started using Source Writer a couple of years ago for census events, at first copying, using Clipboard, sources from one individual to other family members and editing as necessary, that worked fine. I took a break from genealogy and when I came back I created a new Source Writer for a Census choosing "Online Database" instead of "Online Images" as my source. Dah! This choice presents a different Citation/Detail window. Why the difference is not clear to me as they are both ask for similar information but in a different order. I also started to use "Sharing" instead of copying from from one individual to another. I will have to re-enter Census years 1891 to 1841 (I worked backwards). On reflection the advantage of copying and pasting (using Clipboard) Sources from one individual to another is that you can edit subsequent individuals by entering their names and correcting the Folio and Page changes rather than only having the first individuals name (without RIN) and two Folio #s and Page #s. I had also taken advantage when editing of adding the maiden name of married women to their census ID. Maybe RIN should be added also? A Sharing aspect would come from the common "Place" in the Event that shows up in the "Master Location" listing where you can see a list of the individuals at the same "Place/Location". I now see were the difference comes from the "Place (Location)" in the "Event" and "Location Details" as the second prompts for Parish, City etc. Why so is not obvious to me but I guess Elizabeth Shown Mills knows best. As pointed out some sources can be accessed from several organizations. For the England and Wales Census I have used the National Archives as the source and if you visit their site they make reference to Findmypast and Ancestry. There could also be a reference to Family Search. As an aside the FreeBMD website URL recently changed, nothing lasts forever. I think I will list secondary websites in Repository Notes. On the task of re-entering the Census Data from 1841 to 1891 I will proceed using the Clipboard instead of Sharing so that I can edit as necessary. I will also change my selection to "Online Images". I don't want a different master source for everywhere I look at the same set of images. I wouldn't have a different master source if I was accessing a book at a number of different libraries. When seeing the actual image of the original I think Shown Mills gives more prominence to the secondary repository than the actual source. Re Shared Events - I don't use them. I still use the Event Clipboard to copy an event to other relevant people.
