Cathy,
Excellent. This problem had been affecting me for about two weeks and was
stopping me from making Gedcoms (which GenViewer uses to search my 150+ Legacy
files).
Many thanks.

Hi Maurice,
Legacy has a special file to help you do a complete uninstall so you can do a
clean reinstall.
See
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00926/14/Tips-and-How-Tos/Uninstall-how-to-do-a-complete-and-totally-clean-removal-of-Legacy-8.0.html
and other articles in this section of the website.
They explain about the data.
You can save your Legacy settings from Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData
folder but it's possible some of them may be causing the problem

I am encountering failures at start-up which necessitate me clicking

Legacy 14.dbm and then Legacy 16.dbm.
I am fairly sure that I have tried everything in the help centre and
so am now trying to undertake a "Clean Installation" having gone
through many permutations of the update routine after deleting dbm
files. This does not clear the problem though so I want to try a clean
reinstall.
My question is : To do the cleanest reinstall, do I uninstall Legacy 8
first and if so what happens to all my data files (he said trying not
to panic)? I am assuming that I would use the Microsoft Control Panel
method of uninstalling but am worried about my data files. I am using
Windows 8.2.
