You do have a choice in the matter - all you have to do is "save as" rather than "save" and then you can choose where to save your files. And I have never had a problem with specifying where my Legacy start-up family file is located - I just have to set it when I upgrade to a new version of Legacy.. You just have to make the choice to override the defaults.
