Legacy 8 is fully data compatible with your Legacy 6 file so you will
not lose any data. This is true for all versions of Legacy. Newer
versions will convert the files from older ones without data loss. Once
you have converted your file however you will not be able to use it with
Legacy 6.
Because of changes in the way Legacy is installed your Legacy 8.0
installation will not overwrite your Legacy 6.0 so you could perhaps
keep your Legacy 6 running in parallel with Legacy 8 to compare the two.

Hope I'm not "hearing" that I can't get there from here. In other words, is it possible
to go from Legacy 6 Deluxe to Legacy 8, keeping all my data intact? I'm not so worried about
learning some of the nuances of the "new" version, just wanting to know that I do
everything in such a way that I keep all my data and have a clear understanding of where everything
is stored and how everything is backed up.

Okay, I'm nervous about asking this, because the answer is sort of a
big deal in my world! Seriously, please don't judge me, but I have to
confess that I am still running Legacy 6 Deluxe (on Windows 7
Professional). That's right, I have not updated in all this time. It
took me a long time to get comfortable with how Legacy works, and I
simply didn't want to rock the boat, since it was working for me.
To a degree I can understand your reluctance to update and I am certainly not
going to judge you, but I do think it is not always a wise decision. I know
you are now planning to update, so perhaps what I have to say is irrelevant for
you, but I thought I'd mention it for the benefit (I hope!) of others.
When there is an upgrade (like 6 to 7 or 7 to 8, not just an update) there will
be new features to learn which can be a little daunting, but on the whole the
basics stay the same and you don't have to start using all the new features at
once or until you are ready. The new features will almost certainly be what
many, many people have been suggesting or asking for so the chances are you
will like them/find them useful eventually.
Almost inevitably, little bugs and errors are found in programs, hence the
updates between upgrades. If you stick with an old version of the program you
are not going to get any existing faults fixed which could cause real problems
at some time.
As most people will probably keep pace with the upgrades there is going to be a
lot more help available from other users if you are using the current version
of a program. For example, I don't think I ever used Legacy 6 and I have been
using 8 for so long now that I really wouldn't feel confident about helping
anyone with 7 because I can't remember what has changed.
I am now eagerly looking forward to Legacy 9 but as I did when moving from 7 to
8, I will keep the older version on my computer for a while and keep a copy of
my file which can be used with it so I can always go back to it if I find I
really have to.
