Jane,
I don't understand what you mean.
When the Source Clipboard is opened with the triangle, you can change
the detail or you can change the Master Source on it. When it opens as a
result of having Prompt for Detail checked, you can only change the
source detail.
Whatever is on the clipboard is applied when you click to apply it to a
particular field or to all used fields. If you don't have Prompt for
Detail checked, you don't get to review what is on the clipboard.
One of the reasons I keep Prompt for Detail checked is that I often
change Master Source by right clicking on the Source Clipboard Triangle
and choosing a different saved source. I often save not just the Master
Source but "boiler text" for the Source Detail. I need to check which
Master Source is on the clipboard and adjust the Source detail as
appropriate.

I always assumed that meant overwriting the source already on the

Jennifer,
I think you are talking about the Prompt for Detail on the Source
Clipboard so that you can change the detail before applying again.
I leave it on because I often change source on the clipboard and
forget I have.
But sure you can turn it off.
Look at the Source Clipboard screen when it is open.
See the checkbox lower left corner.
It is also controlled from Options > Customise 7.4
If you watch any of the webinars from Geoff Rasmussen you'll see he
works with it off but is far more disciplined than I am in applying
the particular source and detail to every field and person it applies
to before doing anything else.
