Jim: My version of Animap, 2.5.1, only works at full screen with Windows XP. If you try to resize the window (which is really doesn't resize), then Animap becomes unstable -- I have to exit the program and bring it back up. This is definitely a very old program that grew up in the early years of 16 bit Windows.
I was hoping to use Animap to look up a location and transfer Latitude & Longitude into Legacy - but that does not work. Animap has it locations in terms of DDMM. Legacy and most current programs have DDMMSS (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) for locations. I called GoldBug, who developed Animap, and explained my problems with Animap. The tech person said they had problems with Windows XP and were about to release a 32 bit version in the next 2-3 weeks. He offered to send me a free update to the 32 bit version which was nice. Personally, I would recommend anyone considering buying Animap wait until they release their 32 bit version. I think it is a highly useful tool for the serious researcher and I know professional genealogists who use it regularly. It appears to be an old Windows application (16 bit) and has not been update in several years. The only thing that seems useful is to view county boundaries within each state as they have changed with time. If you need that capability, then it does that very well. That's my 2 cents on Animap.
