Frank, I see there are already some good replies here about using scanners with slide attachments to do what you need. Another method to digitize slides is to use a digital camera, which I have described on this mail list: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Technical/SCANNERS-PHOTOS.html
You'll find a link to the archives at the bottom of the page. There are many other scanner and camera tips there as well.
