Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but yes all changes to the Event Sentence Definition 'stick' for EVERY use of the event. Therefore, if you used an event yesterday (or four years ago) and today you changed the Sentence Definition (as opposed to the Sentence Override) those changes would be made to EVERY use of the event - ie those times you used the event in the past as well as any future uses of the event. If you want to make a change to how the sentence reads for a specific person you need to use Sentence Override.
To find out where you have used the event, and therefore check to see if the sentence still reads correctly in all instances you can go to View > Master Lists > Event Definitions. From the list select an event you want to check, then click the "Show List" button. This brings up a list of everyone with that event. You can either print the list then go back to check each one, or you can tag everyone in the list (with an unused tag number) for ease of locating each person to check how the sentence reads.

Hope this helps,
Cheers
Jan

Subject: [LegacyUG] Event Definition was Printing notes in reports

Jan,

Your message is very helpful to me. I was going by the instruction manual. It doesn't say a word about that if you make changes to the default Sentence Definition that those changes 'stick' for every use of the Event.

Does this mean if I were to change the Sentence Definition today that it will go back and change those that I did 4 years ago??

Please let me know. This knowledge has me quite upset and discouraged. Maybe my reading comprehension is poor and this warning/comment is in the instruction manual and I cannot find it.

I don't know if I have what it takes to go back and find events that were changed, let alone figure out which ones need what. I am sick to my stomach and upset over this.

Glad you brought up this, do let me know if it changes the prior ones. I understood about it changing the current & future ones, but sure didn't know it would the prior ones.

Hope this makes sense I am quite distraught over this.

Ann in New Mexico

Linda,
You tracked the problem down to having used sentence override, but it seems
a bit strange to me that you aren't getting ANY notes for events. It
occurred that you might be using Sentence Override for all of your events.
Is this the case? I rarely use Sentence Override - only if the Sentence
Definition just doesn't work for one particular instance of an Event. So
then I wondered if you are using Sentence Override needlessly. Do you
realise that to actually change the way an Event Sentence reads you can make
changes to the default Sentence Definition, and that those changes 'stick'
for every use of the Event?
Now, back to your actual query about how to get notes to appear when you DO
use the Sentence Override - if you want the sentence to read :

John went to school at Brown Street School from 1923. He was dux of his
class in etc. etc. etc. whatever else your notes say.

You need to put the following into the Sentence Override box:

[FirstName] went to school [atPlace] [fromDate].[Sources] [Notes]

Of course, this assumes that you have entered Brown Street School in the
Place field, and 1923 in the Date field.
