Having traveled much of the US within my family names, I have seen both, and I have seen the initial of the maiden name used as a middle initial with the married name. Example: Leda Olga Thomas, m. Evans Listed as Leda Thomas Evans and Leda T. Evans. Others I have seen with the entire maiden name listed as wife of. Example: Elizabeth Ellen Ham wife of J. R. Stephens. And, not that it relates to maiden names, but in one town where the father and son could be confused, the father's stone read, "Elisha D. Chew, husband of Elizabeth." So... there are many configurations to deal with. HOWEVER, that in mind, within legacy, in most cases when you are looking for the burial record, you will know the married name for your search. In the notes, and/or if you have the tombstone image you can clarify the name underwhich she is buried (or has some other record). I almost missed an SSDI record because my aunt's, and also my father's second wife, SSDI record was listed under her second married name with her maiden name initial as the initial for her middle name. It doesn't change that it is her, it just gives you one more AKA to add to the list. (which by the way is a place you can put the married name)

Must be your part of the country, I have never seen maiden names on tombstones.
