Dear all, I need some advice to a problem I couldn't find addressed in the list archives, if someone could help, please.
I have to give a reasonably important genealogical presentation during which I have to demonstrate the principles of modern genealogical research methodology. I would love to show the audience how Legacy integrates multimedia because seeing faces associated with data always seems to cause people's eyes and imaginations to light up with pleasure. Here's the problem: When I copy my multimedia files from my primary PC--a desktop PC, to my laptop for the presentation, the pictures don't show because the file path is different. In theory this should be easy, because I just copy my entire "My Pictures" folder across from ...\My Pictures on destop to ...\My Pictures on laptop. That's in theory. But in practice the file paths are actually not the same at all. This is because Windows XP employs the PC's username as part of the file name. For example: My home PC's file path reads: C:\Documents and Settings\Herman H\My Documents\My Pictures and my laptop file path to the identical folder, reads: C:\Documents and Settings\Herman L\My Documents\My Pictures . Note that the difference lies in the middle: You can see that the two different machines have different assigned subdirectories: "Herman H" which stands for "Herman's home PC" and the other one, "Herman L" which implies: "Herman's Laptop." Now, I have been unable to change my laptop's username so that the file paths will be identical. I just can't find a way, short of a complete XP re-installation. This is an important problem because it affects not only sharing multimedia files, but also restoring them to different PCs. Therefore I'm sure others must have battled with the problem as well. Is anybody able to tell the rest of us how to solve this problem? Restoring the actual data file is no problem. Only the multimedia. It would be nice to solve this hiccup and impress the listeners with Legacy's multimedia capabilities, which although still basic, I consider invaluable. My presentation is on Sunday. Thank you for giving it some thought!
