Also, it is "highly recommended" by the Board For Certification of Genealogists - see http://www.bcgcertification.org/skillbuilders/skbld959.html. It isn't the ONLY format out there - but it is the best of the lot, and most folks seem to prefer it. Ms. Mills would be the first to say that getting your source documented is more important than the specifics of how you do it...but the approach she has taken has been widely adopted.
