for a start I just want to extend the existing project and
see how far we get.  I.e. have another platform NXT,
factor out shared parts and use them both for RCX and NXT,
add some missing parts as options to the VM
(GC, switch, long + double arithmetic, what else?).

Yes, if that is possible it would be nice,
though the code would probably need to be designed
to work on both and not require special features of the NXT.

What I really had in mind was that both RCX and NXT could offer
the same communication protocols (LNP, ...), then you only need
some way for them to communicate.  The only way I know of today
is via the host, but maybe there could be some add-on module
for the NXT that does IR to the RCX
(I have no idea if that is planned / easy / possible).
