Hi David,
I seem to recall that there in fact has been a thread on
lejos-discussion some months ago where people reported of the same
problem you are facing presently on XP.
Hence a look into the archives might prove helpful.
However, according to my experiences the errors you have reported are by
no means the rule for leJOS downloads, not even on Windows XP.
I heard about ambient light making the infrared connection rather
unreliable - could this be a problem in this case?
Regards,
Matthias

I eventually managed to get the HelloWorld program to run last night by
using the 2.1.0 version of lejos on winxp. However the firmware download
took about 6 attempts before it worked and downloading the
HelloWorld.bin program, took about 10 attempts. It kept timing out with
statements like "error -5", "error -4". Is this normal for lejos downloads?
I fiddled with the timeouts values using the (tower control panel icon )
which seemed to make some difference + switched RCX on and off, but the
infrared connection still seemed flakey. With the bundled software,
there were no problems at all, so I don't think my RCX and tower have a
hardware problem.
Is infrared flakeyness with the lejos software a known problem or is it
just me?
David
ps I've applied the winxp patch mentioned below + the RCX was only 10cm
or so from the tower.

By the way, David, are you aware that on XP you need a patched version
of the LEGO Tower driver?
You may download it from the official LEGO page at

Hi Matthias,
I don't think the lejos linux 2.1.0 version could be described as
working. Jurgen Stuber said the following in response to me posting
a query re: running lejos2.1.0 on ubuntu 2.6.12-9-386 (ie. a recent
kernel):-
"Your version of Lejos is too old for the driver in Linux 2.6,
you should instead try the CVS version. It should work, tell us if
it doesn't and we'll fix it."
Oh..sorry, I forgot the change in the kernel version...
Admittedly, long time has passed since I tried the 2.1.0 release on
Linux (working exclusively with the actual CVS state).
But it's true: I couldn't get the 2.1.0 even built against the 2.6
kernel just now :-(
[...]
I'm not sure what is happening with the winxp installation either.
With lejos2.1.0 I can download the firmware to the RCX, but again
cannot download any executables.
Well, this should work at least - I tried 2.1.0 on XP successfully
the very evening yesterday.
I think my problem may lie with the RCX itself. As far as I can tell
it is RIS2.0. However I bought it brand new very recently (say 3
months ago). Do you think it is possible that the RCX box has
changed recently? i.e. Your RCX is different from mine? Suse 9.2 is
also a 2.6 kernel and you say the latest lejos is working?!?, but
presumably you have owned your lego brick for ages. Would this
explain why the firmware won't accept any downloads?
I'm grieved to having to disappoint you here, but my RCX should be
pretty up-to-date: my (in fact rather) old one stopped working in
December and LEGO did send me a new (working) one (as a matter of
fact, I was quite impressed with the high level of service LEGO
provides here).
Of couse I don't know HOW new it is indeed - they might have taken it
from an old shelf in their cellars ;-)
Maybe I will try with your latest windows version, but if that
doesn't work I don't see any obvious ways of progressing.
I'd consider it a good idea to try getting the 2.1.0 version running
on your XP partition as a preliminary (to exclude any configuration
issues).

Matthias
