Charles,

What support for the high-speed RS485 link are you considering? Would this
be a highspeed link between port 4 on two or more NXTs? Can you use a
standard NXT sensor cable for this? To attach more than 1 extra NXT in this
way, would we need some sort of multiplexor?

Lawrie

I had a look at the factory and think that this would be very doable with
only
NXJ (with a few more features implemented :-)) using a similar architecture
to that used by the factory.

There are really two major architectural components:
* Station controllers
* Work-flow controller (which could run on one of the staion controllers).
This sequences the operation of the various subsystems.

Consider that real factories of a few years back (and I daresay still
running
today) often get controlled by Z80-level ladder-logic controller with far
less RAM, flash and CPU than an NXT.

My preferred NXT comms mechanism for a project like this would probably be
the
RS485 link. Few people realise that there is an RS485 link built into the
one
sensor channel. This provides a multi-drop peer-to-peer link that can
shuffle
data at high reliability and pretty high speeds. It is not yet suported by
NXJ.
