Yes, there should probably be a project (or subproject?) for maintaining a 
canonical lens name database, possibly using the exiv2 mapping format or 
whatever. I don't really have the overview of how that should happen, but it's 
becoming pretty clear that it will need to at some point.

The Lensfun software/API project and the lens database maintenance project are 
effectively distinct at this point, at least in the sense that there aren't 
really any contributors in common AFAIK. The database is a valuable resource 
whether the original Lensfun project is actively maintained or not, I would 
say. The database format and correction functions are well documented...
