Well, in this case the "weird" symbols were empty (non-existent)
config files.

Sorry - I hadn't had a chance to look at this in a bit, but just
pulled the current trunk, and it seems to work on OS X (at least, on
my 10.6.3).

I have found a link to getting PyQt up (http://blog.oak-tree.us/
index.php/2010/05/27/pyqt-snow-leopard)  but for me this build fails.

With python 2.6.4, which I built,  Leo does come up and run with Tk.
Running the default 2.6.1 Python that is installed in Snow Leopard,
Leo comes up with qt (version 2.6.1 - judging from the date on the
site-package, it looks like this came installed on the macbook).  Qt
results in much crisper text (among other things).
