It does work, provided there is no space between x and (r).

Fails: x (r)
Works: x(r)

In particular, docutils/sphinx doesn't treat the '(' character
differently, which is what is required.

As I work on the revision of the docs, I am struck by how important
the sphinx tool is. The combination of easy-to-use-and-create index
and glossary is going to make a big difference to Leo's users. In
other words, it is the tool, not I, that is the real key to the
upcoming grand revision. Put another way, the big revision becomes
pretty much a programming problem :-)

P.S. I'm pretty sure that the combination of @all and @thin is what
we need to collaborate chapter-by-chapter on Leo's docs. I'll be
working on this later today.
