I just started looking at Leo, and this struck me as well (see separate thread). It's not so much an understanding issue as a dependency one - if I upgrade my Python installation, I'd rather not have to reinstall Leo. I might (almost non-existent hacking time permitting :-() have a look at whether this is viable. Alternatively, if anyone else gets something working, I'd be a very happy user of it!
